Dramatic Dance - taught by Suzanne Burroughs

There are three levels of Dramatic Dance:

Ages 6-8 - Wednesday at 5:00-6:00 pm

Ages 8-11 - Tuesday & Thursday at 5:00-6:30 pm

TEEN/ADULT - Tuesday & Thursday at 6:45-8:15 pm

Dramatic Dance teaches the fundamentals of ballet, jazz, and modern dance techniques so that dancers gain a basic understanding of the similarities and differences between these styles, and expands on the technical training with exploration of the dance concepts of Laban movement analysis, otherwise known as creative dance.

The dance elements we study are: SPACE, including PLACE, LEVEL, SIZE, DIRECTION, PATHWAY and FOCUS; TIME, including RHYTHM and SPEED; FORCE (my personal favorite concepts), including ENERGY, WEIGHT and FLOW; and BODY, including PARTS, SHAPES, RELATIONSHIPS and BALANCE.

For the beginning to intermediate dance student, this offers the opportunity to gain the basic dance skills required to be proficient in a wide variety of movement styles; and for the more advanced ballet, jazz, or any other kind of dancer, dramatic dance offers a means to become more expressive as a performing artist.

While Dramatic Dance was originally devised as a “theatre dance” class for students who intend to apply their skills in musical theatre, it is also an ideal way for the seasoned ballet dancer to break free from the boundaries of their native technique and find the spark, the motivation, and physical skills to become a much more interesting performer.

Ultimately, Dramatic Dance can become its own dance form, complete with full length dance productions. Suzanne’s Dance Studio is looking forward to growing a new crop of Dramatic Dancers and forming a new performing group to amaze and entertain the world, or at least the Tri-Cities!

Wear comfortable clothing, ballet or jazz shoes, or just socks

(100% cotton is best)

It is recommended that in the 6-8 and 8-11 levels the children acquire some actual dance wear to wear to class, but we do not have an official school uniform at this time.

See Summer Camps page for cost of each class.
